Dawn of the dead Zombie ants!

It’s not a B-movie, this is real life! Scientists have discovered not one but four types of fungus that infect ants, take over their bodies and then kill them. The organism causes the ant to leave its usual habitat in its final moments and bite into leaf veins and vegetation; the perfect place for the host to grow. The ant then dies and the fungus bursts out of its head (I can see where the film Alien got its inspiration…!) and more spores are released to infect unfortunate ants.
The photo above shows a ‘zombie ant’ biting into a fellow ant from its colony, mistaking it for a leaf vein.
