Big dog, little dog

Interesting research about how breeding may have actually changed the wiring in dogs’ brains. Humans have been selectively breeding dogs for different purposes for thousands of years and it seems many of the short-snouted breeds’s brains have changed. Importantly, the smell sensor, the olfactory bulb, has moved towards the base of the skull, possibly altering the dog’s most useful sense. This might help explain why these breeds are not normally used for scent work.
