Sad goodbye to Knut the polar bear…

Knut the polar bear cub who won over millions of fans after his mother rejected him and he was handreared by Berlin zookeepers, has sadly died. An inquest is due to determine why he died at such a young age as polar bears in captivity can live to over 20 years.
As the world’s largest land carnivore and the largest bear an adult male can grow up to 1,500lb. The polar bear and brown bear are closely related (strictly speaking, they aren’t two defined species as they can interbred and the offspring are fertile…!)

Save the polar bears!

New research shows the polar bear might not be doomed…they could be saved from extinction but only if action is taken now!
Previous research showed that we had already reached the point of irreversible ice loss from global warming due to greenhouse gas emissions. But the new study shows that if emissions were cut by 70% by 2100, the ice lost would be reduced to just 20%, potentially saving the polar bear. However, if the current rate is continued, we would lose two thirds of polar bears by 2050 with habitat loss of 50%.
